What is Star-Delta Starter? Working, Advantages and Applications in Industries
😊Introduction:

In industrial systems, electric motors are essential for operating various machines such as pumps, compressors, and conveyors. However, when an induction motor starts directly, it draws a very high current, which can damage the motor and disturb the power supply system.
To reduce this starting current, motor starters are used, and one of the most common methods is the Star-Delta starter.
A Star-Delta starter reduces the starting current by initially connecting the motor in star configuration and later switching it to delta configuration once the motor reaches a certain speed. This method improves motor performance and increases its lifespan.
What is Star - delta Starter?
A Star-Delta starter is a type of motor starter used to reduce the starting current of three-phase induction motors.
It works by starting the motor in star connection and then automatically changing it to delta connection for normal operation.
Why is Star - Delta Starter is Used?
When a motor starts directly using a DOL starter, it draws 6 to 8 times the normal current. This can:
- Cause voltage drop
- Damage equipment
- Increase power loss
The Star-Delta starter reduces this current to a safer level.
Working Principle Of Star - Delta Starter :
Star Connection (Starting Stage)
- Motor windings are connected in star
- Voltage is reduced to 58%
- Starting current is reduced
Delta Connection (Running Stage)
- Motor switches to delta connection
- Full voltage is applied
- Motor runs at full speed
Components Of Star - Delta Starter
- Main Contactor
- Star Contactor
- Delta Contactor
- Timer
- Overload Relay
- Push Buttons
1. Main Contactor
The Main Contactor is the primary switching device that connects the motor to the power supply.
- It remains ON during both star and delta operation
- Supplies power to the motor circuit
- Works together with star and delta contactors
Without the main contactor, the motor cannot receive power.
2. Star Contactor
The Star Contactor is used during the starting stage of the motor.
- It connects the motor windings in star configuration
- Reduces the voltage applied to the motor (about 58%)
- Helps reduce inrush current
It is active only during starting and then switches OFF.
3. Delta Contactor
The Delta Contactor operates after the motor reaches a certain speed.
- It connects the motor windings in delta configuration
- Supplies full voltage to the motor
- Allows the motor to run at full speed
It turns ON after the star contactor turns OFF.
4. Timer
- The Timer controls the changeover from star to delta.
- Sets a time delay (usually 5–10 seconds)
After the set time, it:
- Turns OFF the star contactor
- Turns ON the delta contactor
Ensures smooth transition without damage.
5. Over Load Relay
The Overload Relay protects the motor from overheating.
- Trips the circuit if current exceeds safe limit
- Prevents motor damage due to overload
- Automatically or manually resets after trip
👉Very important safety device in the starter.
6. Push Buttons
Push buttons are used for manual control of the motor.
Types:
- Start Button (Green) → Starts the motor
- Stop Button (Red) → Stops the motor
Simple and user-friendly control method.
Simple Working Summary
-
Press Start Button
-
Main + Star Contactor → ON
-
Motor starts in Star mode
-
Timer counts delay
-
Star OFF → Delta ON
Motor runs in full speed (Delta mode)
Advantages of Star Delta Starters
- Reduces starting current
- Protects motor
- Increases motor life
- Simple and cost-effective
Disadvantages of Star-Delta Starter
- Not suitable for heavy load starting
- Causes torque reduction
- Switching causes small disturbance
Applications of Star Delta Starters In Industries
Water pumps
-
Air compressors
-
Conveyor systems
-
Industrial fans and blowers
Conclusion
The Star-Delta starter is a widely used and efficient method for reducing motor starting current in industrial applications. It helps protect equipment, improve performance, and extend the life of electric motors.
Understanding its working and applications is essential for anyone involved in electrical and industrial systems.
